Ianthinopsis gouldiana was named by Girty (1912). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Wewoka Shale Station 2006, which is in a Moscovian marine shale in the Wewoka Formation of Oklahoma.
It was recombined as Strobeus gouldiana by Harper (1981).
