Protolonsdaleiastraea was named by Gorskiy (1932) [Sepkoski's age data: C Step P Guad-l]. It is not extant. Its type is Protolonsdaleiastraea atbassarica.
It was synonymized subjectively with Orionastraea by Hill (1956).
It was assigned to Durhaminidae by Hill (1981); to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Kleopatrinidae by Fedorowski et al. (2007).
