Protopilophyllum was named by Ivanovskiy (1963) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-u S Wenl]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Pycnostylidae by Hill (1981); to Amplexidae by Chen et al. (1997); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
