Pampahippus was named by Bond and López (1993). It is not extant. Its type is Pampahippus arenalesi. It was considered monophyletic by Deraco and GarcÍa-López (2016).

It was assigned to Notohippidae by Bond and López (1993) and Deraco and GarcÍa-López (2016).
