Taxonomy
Histocidarina was named by Mortensen (1928). It is extant. Its type is Histocidaris. It is the type unranked clade of Histocidaridea.

It was reranked as the subfamily Histocidarinae by Fell (1966) and Grawe-Baumeister et al. (2000); it was reranked as the family Histocidaridae by Smith (2009) and Kroh and Smith (2010).

It was assigned to Stereocidarinae by Mortensen (1928); to Cidaridae by Fell (1966); to Rhabdocidaridae by Grawe-Baumeister et al. (2000); to Cidaroida by Smith (2009); and to Histocidaridea by Kroh and Smith (2010).
