Ilyanassa was named by Stimpson (1865). It is extant.

It was reranked as Nassarius (Ilyanassa) by Abbott (1954).

It was assigned to Nassidae by Martin (1904); to Buccinidae by Clark (1906); to Nassarius by Abbott (1954); and to Nassariidae by Gardner (1943), Gardner (1948), Olsson (1967) and Rosenberg (2005).
