Hyracotheriinae was named by Cope (1881). It was considered paraphyletic by MacFadden (1998).
It was assigned to Lophiodontidae by Cope (1881); to Hyracotheriidae by Lucas and Kondrashov (2004); and to Equidae by Hay (1902), Gidley (1907), Peterson (1919), McGrew (1953), MacFadden (1998) and Franzen (2006).
