Scalites tropidophora was named by Meek (1873) [Pleurotomaria (Scalites?) tropidophora. This was not a subgenus assignment, but an alternative assignment to Scalites.]. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Pleurotomaria (Scalites) tropidophora by Meek (1873); it was recombined as Lophospira tropidophora by Ulrich and Scofield (1897), Foerste (1924) and Wagner (1995); it was recombined as Pleurotomaria (Lophospira) tropidophora by Perner (1911); it was recombined as Schizolopha tropidophora by Frey (1987); it was recombined as Paupospira tropidophora by Wagner (1999) and Wagner (2023).
