Sciophyllum was named by Harker and McLaren (1950) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Lonsdaleiinae by Hill (1956); to Thysanophyllinae by Hill (1981); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
