It was assigned to Streptelasmatinae by Hill (1956); to Siphonophrentinae by Merriam (1974); to Amplexidae by Hill (1981) and Chen et al. (1997); to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Siphonophrentidae by Tsyganko (2014).

C. W. Merriam 1974Oliver's (1960a, p. 87) diagnosis is as follows:
Simple, ceratoid to cylindrical corals with amplexoid septa withdrawn from axis except on and just above upper surfaces of tabulae. Tabulae dome-shaped, flat or concave axially, depressed at the fossula. No axial structure or dissepiments.
