Voluta petrosa was named by Conrad (1833) [DISTRIBUTION: Eocene; Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains, Mexico.]. It is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Volutilithes petrosa by Conrad (1854) and Clark (1895); it was recombined as Athleta petrosus by Kosnik (2002); it was recombined as Athleta petrosa by Palmer (1937), Harris and Palmer (1947) and Perrilliat et al. (2006).
