Stereostylus was named by Jeffords (1947) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u P Djhu Sepkoski's reference number: 2,893]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Lophophyllidiidae by Hill (1956); to Lophophyllidae by Hill (1981); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
