Colloniidae was named by Cossmann (1917) [m. kosnik taxon no: 7583]. It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Colloniinae by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995) and Bouchet et al. (2005); it was reranked as the tribe Colloniini by Ferrari (2014).

It was assigned to Turbinidae by Wilson (1993), Pacaud and Le Renard (1995), Lozouet et al. (2001) and Bouchet et al. (2005); and to Ataphrinae by Ferrari (2014).
