Columbariinae was named by Tomlin (1928) [m. kosnik taxon no: 8132].

It was reranked as the family Columbariidae by Zinsmeister (1983).

It was assigned to Muricacea by Zinsmeister (1983); and to Turbinellidae by Ponder and Warén (1988), Wilson (1994), Harasewych (2004) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
