Acaeniotyle was named by Foreman (1973) [Sepkoski's age data: J Call-m K Camp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 753]. It is the type genus of Acaeniotylinae.

It was assigned to Acaeniotylidae by Hull (1997); to Acaeniotylinae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
