Dreissenacea was named by Gray (1840) [m. kosnik taxon no: 6059]. It is extant.

It was corrected as Dreissenoidea by Rosenberg (2005), Bieler and Mikkelsen (2006), Nevesskaja (2009) and Carter et al. (2011).

It was assigned to Heterodonta by Rosenberg (2005); to Veneroida by Vokes (1980), Bieler and Mikkelsen (2006) and Nevesskaja (2009); and to Dreissenoitei by Carter et al. (2011).
