Trochophyllum was named by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l C Tour-u]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Laccophyllidae by Hill (1956) and Easton et al. (1958); to Neaxoninae by Hill (1981); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).

W. H. Easton et al. 1958Small, ceratoid, curved or geniculate, simple corals. Epitheca smooth, striate, pseudocostate, or with septal grooves. Calyx inverted, moderately deep, Septa in one or two orders, most meeting at or forming an axial tube. Tabulae may be in two orders, those in the axial tube constituting "inner tabulae," and those in loculi con- stituting "outer tabulae."
