Venus fimbriata was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Indo-Pacific.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Fimbria.

It was recombined as Fimbria fimbriata by Nicol (1950), Lamprell and Whitehead (1992) and Wilson (2002).
