Gryphaea vomer was named by Morton (1828) [DISTRIBUTION: Eocene; Gulf Coast.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Ostrea vomer by de Gregario (1890); it was recombined as Gryphaeostrea vomer by Stephenson (1941) and Palmer and Brann (1965).
