Gyrodinae was named by Wenz (1941) [m. kosnik taxon no: 6394]. Its type is Gyrodes.

It was assigned to Ampullospirinae by Wenz (1941), Marincovich (1977) and Kabat (1991); and to Naticidae by Sohl (1964), Gliozzi and Malatesta (1983), Popenoe et al. (1987) and Dockery (1993).
