Wintunastraea was named by Merriam (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl]. Its type is Wintunastraea stanleyi.

It was assigned to Stauriidae by Merriam (1972); to Kyphophyllidae by Hill (1981); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).

C. W. Merriam 1972Cerioid stauriid having sporadic groups of small and large lonsdaleioid dissepiments but lacking a continuous dissepimentarium. Tabulae closely spaced, nearly flat peripherally, very strongly arched axially. Septal stereozone with scattered nearly horizontal trabeculae.
