Mytilus hyotis was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Ostrea hyotis by Mukerjee (1939) and Azzaroli (1958); it was recombined as Ostrea (Lopha) hyotis by Ladd and Hoffmeister (1945); it was recombined as Lopha hyotis by Skwarko (1994); it was recombined as Hyotissa hyotis by Moore (1987), Freneix et al. (1988), Perrilliat (1994), Wilson (2002), Raith et al. (2016) and Hendy (2020).
