Laetmogonidae was named by Ekman (1926) [m. kosnik taxon no: 10541]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Elasipoda by Ekman (1926), Pawson (1966), Gilliland (1993) and Reich (1995); to Holothuroidea by Rowe and Gates (1995); and to Elasipodida by Frizzell and Exline (1966) and Kerr and Kim (2001).
