Lepetidae was named by Gray (1850) [m. kosnik taxon no: 5284]. It is extant. Its type is Lepetinae.

It was assigned to Patelloidea by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995); to Patellacea by Knight et al. (1960) and Kosnik (2002); to Acmaeoidea by Beesley (1998) and Jeffery (2003); and to Lottioidea by Bouchet et al. (2005).
