Volutilithes (Athleta) leioderma was named by Conrad (1860) [TYPE SPECIMEN: Holotype lost]. Its type specimen is USNM 32099, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Lioderma lioderma by Conrad (1865); it was recombined as Liopeplum leioderma by Sohl (1964).
