Mytilus cristagalli was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Ostrea (Lopha) cristagalli by Ladd and Hoffmeister (1945); it was recombined as Lopha cristagalli by Wilson (2002) and Rosenberg et al. (2006).
