Melampidae was named by Stimpson (1851) [m. kosnik taxon no: 10012]. It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Melampinae by Bouchet et al. (2005).

It was assigned to Melampoidea by Jeffery (2003); and to Ellobiidae by Bouchet et al. (2005).
