Acanthogyra was named by Ogilvie (1897) [Sepkoski's age data: J Oxfo-l K Apti-l Sepkoski's reference number: 819,820].

It was assigned to Rhipidogyridae by Wells (1956); to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Rhipidogyrinae by Pandey and Fürsich (2003).
