Pecten asperrimus was named by Lamarck (1819). It is extant.

It was recombined as Chlamys (Chlamys) asperrima by Ludbrook (1983); it was recombined as Mimachlamys asperrima by Lamprell and Whitehead (1992) and Beu and Taviani (2013).
