Voluta mitra was named by Linnaeaus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Pacific.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Mitra, Mitra (Mitra).

It was recombined as Mitra (Mitra) mitra by Woodring (1964); it was recombined as Mitra mitra by Lamarck (1799), Kosnik (2002) and Stilwell et al. (2004).
