Montacutidae was named by Clark (1855) [m. kosnik taxon no: 5175]. It is extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Lasaeidae by Parker (1982), Coan et al. (2000) and Bouchet et al. (2010).
It was assigned to Leptonacea by Newell (1965); to Galeommatacea by Vokes (1980) and Beu et al. (1990); and to Leptonoidea by Marquet (2005) and Nevesskaja (2009).
