Poulpus was named by De Wever (1979) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-l J Toar Sepkoski's reference number: 763]. It is the type genus of Poulpidae.

It was assigned to Poulpidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
