Ostrea falcata was named by Morton (1827) [m. kosnik taxon no: 1772].

It was recombined as Arctostrea falcata by Bobkova (1961); it was recombined as Lopha falcata by Owens et al. (1970); it was recombined as Agorostrea falcata by Baird (1984); it was recombined as Agerostrea falcata by Kosnik (2002) and Aberhan (2010).
