Ovula was named by Bruguière (1789) [m. kosnik taxon no: 7893]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Ovulidae, Ovulinae.

It was assigned to Ovulidae by Ladd (1982), Wilson (1993) and Rosenberg et al. (2006); and to Ovulinae by Landau and Fehse (2004) and Dolin and Pacaud (2009).
