Paleopsephaea was named by Wade (1926) [m. kosnik taxon no: 4661].

It was reranked as Voluta (Paleopsephaea) by Riedel (1933).

It was assigned to Voluta by Riedel (1933); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Fasciolariinae by Sohl (1964), Snyder (2003) and Stilwell et al. (2004).
