It was considered an invalid subgroup of Veneridae by Bieler and Mikkelsen (2006); it was reranked as the subfamily Petricolinae by Bouchet et al. (2010); it was reranked as the family Petricolina by Carter et al. (2011).
It was assigned to Veneracea by Glenn (1904), Vokes (1980) and Ward and Blackwelder (1987); to Veneroidea by Ward (1992), Coan et al. (2000) and Nevesskaja (2009); to Veneridae by Bouchet et al. (2010); and to Meretricini by Carter et al. (2011).
