Phasianellidae was named by Swainson (1840) [m. kosnik taxon no: 5292]. It is extant. Its type is Phasianellinae.

It was assigned to Phasianellinae by Kosnik (2002); to Trochacea by Knight et al. (1960) and Kosnik (2002); to Turbinidae by Jeffery (2003); and to Turbinoidea by Bouchet et al. (2005) and Harzhauser et al. (2009).
