Monoceros vetusta was named by Conrad (1833) [m. kosnik taxon no: 6809].

It was recombined as Sulcobuccinum vetusta by Vermeij (1998); it was misspelled as Pseudoliva vestusa by Elder (1981); it was recombined as Pseudoliva vetusta by Harris and Palmer (1947) and Kosnik (2002).
