Pteriacea was named by Gray (1847) [m. kosnik taxon no: 6130].

It was replaced with Pterioidea by Ride et al. (1999).

It was assigned to Prionodesmacea by Glenn (1904); to Pterioida by Vokes (1980); to Pteriina by Newell (1965), Dockery (1982) and Squires (1984); and to Pteriomorphia by Lin et al. (2007).
