Bilaterocoenia was named by Morycowa (1974) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith Sepkoski's reference number: 868]. It is not extant. Its type is Bilaterocoenia hexaseptata.

It was assigned to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stylinidae by Roniewicz (2008).
