Bothrophoria was named by Felix (1909) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 2,1125]. Its type is Bothrophoria ornata.

It was assigned to Turbinoliinae by Wells (1956); to Turbinoliidae by Cairns (1997); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
