Ostrea glomerata was named by Gould (1850) [DISTRIBUTION: Late Miocene-Recent; Indo-Pacific-New Zealand.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Ostrea (Ostrea) glomerata by Skwarko (1994); it was recombined as Saccostrea glomerata by Wilson (2002) and Hendy (2007).
