Carolastraea was named by Eliasova (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: J Call-m J Tith Sepkoski's reference number: 688]. It is not extant. Its type is Carolastraea fraji. It is the type genus of Carolastraeidae.
It was assigned to Carolastraeidae by Baron-Szabo (2002); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
