Caryophyllia was named by Lamarck (1801) [Sepkoski's age data: J u R Sepkoski's reference number: 796,ZR85]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Caryophylliinae.

It was assigned to Cnidaria by Howse (1848); to Caryophylliinae by Wells (1956) and Baron-Szabo (2002); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
