Pterocanium was named by Ehrenberg (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R]. It is extant. Its type is Pterocanium proserpinae.

It was assigned to Ultranaporidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
