Agathelia was named by Reuss (1854) [Sepkoski's age data: K Haut K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 837]. It is not extant. Its type is Agathelia asperella.

It was assigned to Agatheliidae by Baron-Szabo (1997); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
