Pterocodon was named by Ehrenberg (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than R Sepkoski's reference number: 686]. Its type is Pterocodon campana. It was considered unknown by Ehrenberg (1847).

It was assigned to Theocotylidae by Ehrenberg (1847); and to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
