Coccophyllum was named by Reuss (1865) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori-m J Plie-l Sepkoski's reference number: 825,919].

It was assigned to Stylophyllidae by Wells (1956) and Stanley (1986); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
