Codonosmilia was named by Koby (1888) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath J u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is not extant. Its type is Codonosmilia elegans.

It was assigned to Rhipidogyridae by Wells (1956); to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Rhipidogyrinae by Pandey and Fürsich (2003).
