Thecosmilia badiotica was named by Volz (1896). Its type locality is Forcella di Sett Sass, Italy, which is in a Carnian shallow subtidal marl in the Cassian Formation of Italy. It is the type species of Volzeia.
It was recombined as Volzeia badiotica by Stanley and Onoue (2015).
